How Many Safety Switches Do I Need?

So, you have a safety switch. But do you know if your safety switch protects just your power points, or just your lights, or both?

In most homes and businesses, if you have a safety switch, it is only installed on the 'power circuits' (that is, it only protects you when you are plugging items into the power points).

When our Electricians wire a new home now, it is law that safety switches are installed on both the 'power' and 'lighting' circuits.

Most of the 'web' of wiring running in your home or business is actually wiring for the lights. The wires are run up and down the walls to the light switches, and then run through the ceiling to the lights. In a normal home or business, there is nothing installed in the electrical switchboard on the lighting circuit that will save you should things go wrong. Sure, you have a fuse or circuit breaker installed at the start of these lighting circuits, but they are just designed to protect the wiring (and not people). Because most of the wiring is for the lights, doesn't it make sense to have a safety switch installed on your lighting circuits as well?

A safety switch will protect you should you accidentally drive a nail into the wall and hit a wire when you hang that picture. A safety switch will protect you should a light fitting become faulty and live with electricity (you don't want to be touching this light to change a bulb!). A safety switch will protect you should a leak in your roof cause water to go into a light fitting. A safety switch will protect you if a rat chews through your electrical cabling exposing the live wiring.

You see, you can't afford to NOT have a safety switch on your lighting circuits as well. In fact, to ensure your electrical safety for you and your family, you should really have safety switches on every circuit at your switchboard.

So, how do you know how many circuits your existing safety switch protects? Well, it's a little tricky to tell from the untrained eye. However, call our Brisbane Electricians today on 1300 761 141 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1300 761 141 end_of_the_skype_highlighting, and they will be more than happy to assist you.

A safety switch is designed to protect people, and will cut power in less than 30 milliseconds before the electricity reaches you. They really are a worthwhile investment.
